Branches of the Surveillance Research Program

Listed below are the four branches that, along with the Office of the Associate Director, comprise the Surveillance Research Program. Select a branch below to learn more about its role within SRP, its staff members, and their areas of expertise.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to advance the science on analytic, modeling, reporting and interpretation methods for cancer epidemiological surveillance data in order to measure progress in reducing the US cancer burden.

Research areas of focus for the Branch include, but are not limited to:

  • Innovative tools and approaches for the analysis, reporting, visualization and interpretation of cancer surveillance data
  • Novel methods and algorithms to develop, evaluate, and improve cancer progress measures and indicators spanning the cancer continuum, such as
  • New analytic methods for the harmonization, enhancement, and validation of novel sources of data and variables to expand the utility of cancer surveillance data
    • Multiple Imputation to enhance newly collected data (e.g. biomarkers)
    • Methods to examine the biases and population representativeness
  • Funding opportunities in cancer surveillance

About Us

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide essential information for tracking the nation’s progress against cancer and lead the analysis and interpretation of patterns and trends in population-based cancer surveillance data. We provide national leadership to the surveillance community in cancer data collection, quality improvement, education, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of cancer burden.

About Us

Areas of Research

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide optimal statistical methods for the collection, analysis, and presentation of essential measures related to the cancer control, surveillance, and epidemiology programs of the National Cancer Institute and the broader cancer control and research community. These methods are pertinent to cancer outcomes, risk and behavioral factors, spatial and temporal factors, genetic factors, and health care delivery factors.

Areas of Research

Mission Statement

Our mission is to advance precision cancer surveillance through the application of informatics tools, methods, and architectures. Research areas of focus for the branch include but are not limited to:

  • innovative methods and approaches for acquiring, abstracting, analyzing, sharing, and visualizing data for cancer surveillance,
  • automated and cost effective methods for data capture and integration, including abstraction facilitated with natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning,
  • acquisition, linkage, and integration of traditional cancer registry data with new data sources to expand and enhance the scope of cancer surveillance research across the cancer continuum and fuel population-level precision oncology research, and
  • enhancements of SEER Data Management System (SEER*DMS).
