Toward Precision
Cancer Surveillance

Cancer is a major health burden, with an estimated 1,688,780 new diagnoses in 2017. Between the difficulty of receiving a cancer diagnosis and the complexity of cancer data, patients and loved ones may have difficulty interpreting cancer information. The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) “Did You Know?” video series breaks down cancer statistics in layman’s terms and includes easy-to-understand charts and graphs.

The “Did You Know?” video series was created through a partnership between NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program and the NCI Office of Communications and Public Liaison (OCPL). In under 5 minutes, each “Did You Know?” video discusses a specific cancer type, such as bladder cancer, or a cancer-related topic, such as cancer survivorship. Each video presents statistics that include numbers, rates, and trends in new diagnoses, 5-year survival trends, and mortality rates and trends. The statistics are given for different racial and ethnic groups, as well as for women and men. The cancer data from NCI’s SEER Program is used to share the statistics in the videos. The goal of each “Did You Know?” video is to present often complicated statistics in a format that is easily understood by a broad range of audiences:  people who have been diagnosed with cancer, their loved ones, the general public, policymakers, advocacy groups, cancer registrars, cancer control planners, the press, researchers, clinicians, and others. The videos that focus on a specific type of cancer discuss not only statistics for that cancer, but also topics such as risk factors and prevention, evidence-based screening recommendations, and treatment advances. Every video also includes links to sites that provide additional information and more detailed data on each cancer topic.

The series may be viewed on SEER’s website, as well as NCI’s YouTube Channel under the “Cancer Statistics” playlist. Currently, viewers can find nearly 25 videos, including melanoma, leukemia, thyroid cancer, cancer health disparities, and human papillomavirus (HPV). The HPV video recently reached 29,000 views, making it the most popular video in the series to date. NCI’s “Did You Know?” team is always working on new topics and updates for the series, with videos on rare cancers, risk factors for cancer, lung cancer, and an updated HPV video coming soon.
