Shaimar Gonzalez Morales

Areas of Expertise:

  • Environmental exposures
  • Data science
  • Lung cancer risk and incidence

Dr. Gonzalez Morales has joined the NCI Surveillance Research Program (SRP)’s Statistical Research and Applications Branch (SRAB) as a Cancer Prevention Fellow. She received her Ph.D. in integrated biomedical sciences from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Her dissertation focused on studying developmental pathways that are aberrantly activated during adulthood and potentially cause lung cancer progression. Dr. Gonzalez Morales also holds a master’s degree in data science and uses artificial intelligence to quantify and track environmental exposures.

Dr. Gonzalez Morales is interested in applying her knowledge of data science to investigate environmental exposures and their relationship to cancer risk and incidence, and potentially develop toxicological models and/or spatiotemporal applications to support this research.

Dr. Gonzalez Morales will be working together with Dr. Li Zhu. Their study will focus on the effects of indoor and outdoor air pollution on lung cancer risk and incidence rates from chemicals like radon and chlorine. They will use SEER and Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project data from Utah.
