Statistical Genetics: Software and Research Resources

SRP, in collaboration with the Epidemiology and Genomics Research Program (EGRP), supports research in the areas of statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology. Examples of completed and ongoing activities include:

  • Genetic Simulation Resources (GSR) - Genetic simulation programs are often used to predict properties of populations retrospectively or prospectively according to mathematically intractable genetic models. They also assist the validation, statistical inference, and power analysis of a variety of statistical models. It can be a challenge to find and select the right tool for a particular study due to differences in types of genetic data of interest, simulation methods, evolutionary features, input and output formats, terminologies, and assumptions.
    The GSR provides a web-based catalogue of genetic simulation software programs and data sets to help researchers compare and choose the right simulation tools for their studies.
  • Workshop on Next-Generation Analytic Tools - NCI sponsored the trans-NIH workshop titled “Next generation analytic tools for large scale genetic epidemiology studies of complex diseases” on September 15-16, 2010. The goal of this workshop was to foster research in developing statistical strategies for identifying genetic and environmental factors that contribute to disease. One recommendation from the workshop was to create the GSR.
  • Epidemiology and Genomics Research Program - Includes links to collaborative initiatives, datasets, and NIH policy information related to population-based genetics research.
