Advancing Cancer Surveillance Through Education: Highlights from the 2025–2026 SEER Workshop

The annual SEER Workshop: Advanced Topics for Registry Professionals, hosted by the Surveillance Research Program's (SRP) Data Quality, Analysis, and Interpretation Branch (DQAIB) in collaboration with the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA), was held February 2–27, 2026. Offered in an on-demand virtual format, the workshop provided cancer registry professionals with updates on coding standards, staging, disease classification, and other topics relevant to cancer surveillance and data collection.
Keeping Pace with Changes in Cancer Surveillance
As cancer diagnosis, treatment, and classification continue to evolve, cancer registries must adapt their data collection practices and reporting standards. The 2025–2026 workshop featured sessions designed to help registrars stay current with these changes.
Topics included:
- 2026 SEER Manual Highlights
- SEER*Rx Updates in 2025
- Cancer PathCHART and ICD-O-4 Updates
- Classification of Hematopoietic Neoplasms
- Hematopoietic Changes and Updates in 2026
- The Ins and Outs of the Solid Tumor Rules
- AJCC Staging vs. EOD Staging
Together, these sessions reviewed recent updates and provided guidance for applying current coding and staging standards.
Clinical Topics and Emerging Issues
Several presentations focused on clinical concepts that affect cancer registration and data interpretation. These included discussions of cancer recurrence, co-morbidities, and reporting considerations for intraepithelial neoplasia and dysplasia.
Sessions such as Staging of Cancer Recurrence: Clinical Relevance and Current Gaps in Data Collection and The Importance of Co-morbidities for Cancer Outcomes explored areas of growing interest for researchers and clinicians, while presentations on intraepithelial neoplasia addressed common reporting questions encountered by registrars.
Site-Specific and Specialized Coding Topics
The workshop also included presentations focused on specific disease sites and coding challenges. Topics covered breast cancer treatment and radiation coding, plasma cell myeloma, gynecologic neoplasia, brain tumors, medulloblastoma, and cranial nerve anatomy. Several sessions drew upon resources available through SEER*Educate, SRP's online training platform.
These sessions provided practical examples and guidance for abstracting and coding complex cases.
On-Demand Access to Workshop Materials
As in recent years, the workshop was offered in an on-demand format, allowing participants to complete sessions throughout the month of February. Recordings and presentation materials are available free of charge through NCRA's Center for Cancer Registry Education (CCRE). Participants may also obtain continuing education (CE) credits through NCRA for a fee.
Making workshop materials available online helps extend access to training and allows registrars to revisit presentations as needed.
